The GSP

In The Beginning

Origins of the Breed

The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany during the 19th century as an all-purpose gundog, coming from the similar ancestors as other Hunt, Point, Retrieve breeds to be found on the continent of Europe.

It is a short coated, medium sized dog of an alert and intelligent disposition. It’s ability in the shooting field to perform the all-embracing role of game finding, pointing and retrieving dog has brought recognition of its suitability as a companion to the average rough shooting man in Great Britain.

The GSP has a very highly developed air scenting ability and is a most admirable game-finder. It is a staunch pointer and readily holds birds for the gun.

It is required to be steady in the field and to be a tender-mouthed retriever from both land and water. The GSP is a tireless worker, ranging open ground and working cover with equal enthusiasm.

The tail is customarily docked, solely to prevent injury when working in close cover.
