Margaret Davison February 29th 1936—-October 17th 2018
On October 17th 2018 Margaret Davison passed away after a short illness.
Together, with Sir Michael Leighton bt, she was one of the original A panel judges, known then as Margaret Sanderson. I first met her when trialling my first G.S.P. at Ford in 1974, but vividly remember her arriving at a trial with Anne McEver calling out “I’ve brought the winning dog! Strange behaviour I thought! But that was Margaret all over, full of fun and not caring what folk thought..In the event I won the the trial. This was at Palinsburn in 1975.
She had been brought up on a farm and horses were a very big part of her life. Hunting in her younger days with the Morpeth, and having a trainers licence, she was a very good judge of livestock. At that time she was married to Bill Sanderson, himself an A panel judge, and together they owned the Throphill prefix. I remember Bill successfully campaigning Throphill Zephyr. After their marriage dissolved she went on to marry Chris Davison and they lived at Bardon Hill operating a haulage business. Travelling the countryside, Chris was always on the look out for suitable field trial grounds, and together they presented the G.S.P.A. with some fabulous venues, Kirkoswald, Arniston, and Ray to name but a few. Always a popular judge, she judged in Ireland too in the early days, Margaret was very canny and didn’t miss a trick. In spite of the fact that she experienced some discomfort when walking due to one foot being smaller than the other, she didn’t let this incapacitate her.
In 1993 we judged the Championship together at Oldcotes .
Moving to Penton in the late ‘90’s she again found another trial ground It was always open house there, everyone was always assured of a warm welcome and she loved having people to stay. Never without her beloved G.S.P.’s, she always had at least one,she entered the show scene in the early 2000’s enjoying success at championship shows with Valger Ice Maiden.
A chance meeting at Tebay with Clarissa Dickson-Wright who spotted Tess her current dog in the car, led to a friendship which endured until Clarissa’s death, but she still enjoyed days out on the moor with Johnny Scott, Clarissa’s friend, shooting the odd bird over her dog Tess.
Fell hound racing was another activity which she enjoyed whilst at Penton. She also kept up with her friends in Ireland travelling over to races in Punchestown.
She led a full and active life to the end, a true country woman and a great character who will be sadly missed
